The laptop I am using runs most of the compiz effects, but when I downloaded some more advanced effects like burn when you close, or the beam me up effect, the effects lag. What I would like to know is would I benefit from downloading some extra drivers to support the graphics? The laptop is the dell inspiron 1526, Amd turion 64, 3 gigs of ram, ATI Radeon Xpress 1270. Now ubuntu runs beautifully until I use these effects. What can I do besides get a better laptop?
Thank you

You can manually update your ATI drivers to the latest propitiatory version.
Download them here:

First make sure you remove the previous installed one.
If you need help with that, I'm sure google will have some guides with copy/paste commands.

That being said, it's no guarantee that that will do it.
You card (low end, like mine) just isn't that powerful.

I found that a lot of the effects appeared to be running really slowly because the default configuration options weren't really that great. Change some of the options for the animations in ccsm, things like the time step and slowdown settings. See if that helps.

I agree, play with the settings until there just right.
