Has any group considered raising fund to advertise Linux in any way (on the net, in print, ect...)? If not I propose such an idea. Any thoughts?

Crosses my mind all the time.

I think, if something like this was to be aired internationaly, Linux would grow big realy fast:

Yeah I seen those commercials here as well. I thought it was funny that the kid who was supposedly representing Linux was very Finish looking :)

I believe Linspire is thinking about making an ad

I hate to say it but Linux has never had a great "image" or at least not a very hip one especially when compared to Apple. I plan to help change this though.
My first jab at this was... the Gimp Flower Look (http://jimmyjazz.homeip.net:808/theGimp1024x768.png)

Until Linux gets better hardware support we should work on making it better and not more popular.

Im with you. "if we build it they will come" we need to get hardware working...... but If linux was more popular hardware companies would be more willing to help us do that

Doing this would cost millions... Only a humungonus company would be able to afford this. ;)

" If you are sick of Bills s**t, then try Ubuntu. :p

I prefer not to drop to M$ level by smearing the competition like they do...http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/facts/default.mspx

I totally agree as some people mentioned the 'message' aspect.
For now it's difficult to advertise in a 'Linux-way' of being. Advertising is actually for profit-making companies since they need to make their product more known to an audience. Linux on the other hand doesn't want to achieve any profit goals so making commercials about the 'spirit' of Ubuntu would not be understand correctly by the audience. The terms ubuntu will be converted to: "Oh hey guys, listen up... there's this cool new OS and it's free. You don't pay ****!"

Advertising now would be actually suecide in my opinion, destroying your message which already found so many people without tv / website adds.

well, my grandmother and I are starting a computer company which would sell directly to consumers (like Dell) but offer Linux-Friendly notebooks and desktops with a fully-configured Ubuntu installed on them. I'm already working on the "Powered by Ubuntu HInts, Tips, and Tricks" guide

I agree. Otherwise next thing we know, we get a bunch of bad publicity because someone needed to use his/her webcam urgently and there were no drivers under Linux and he had removed his windows.
Or someone erases his data and gets angry and starts suing...

Those ads are ok but it still doesn't change the fact that if you go up to ANY kid in my school chances are 9 times out of 10 he/she'll say "Why do we have to use Macintsoh? Why can't we use PC's like the rest of the world?"

I can confirm that. The other high school in my town just gave all of their students (bottom-of-the-line) MacBooks. I have a lot of non-geeky friends there and not one of them has said a good thing about the macs.

I told them to install Linux. They rolled their eyes and asked what Linux was.

Meh.
