I think the website could use a more clear and clean design. A bit 'messy'.

Yeah, right now it just looks like another phpnuke site with downloads and a theme. NoScript is complaining alot of the clickjacking too (the site isn't even about ubuntu gamers)

Yes the Site is new I just put it all up about 4 days ago.. Worked on it like a dog.. It will be refined over time and any suggestions are fully appreciated.. I started working with Linux in 93 and I think this is a good way for me to give something back to the community with something I love gaming! If anyone would liek to even volenteer in a area they like just let me know.. Happy to work with everyone.. I have a bunch of sites well maintained and started my first BBS in 84 and ran a Fidonet hub Ect Ect ect..

Feel free to bounce around in it .. Content is limited at this point being only 4 days old..
However I know refining takes time and a good ear!

Seems that would be more for a developer than a forum and file hosting site however it seem lie the dream package a lot of people are looking for ..

The main problem imo in this website part from the content (which will need to be added ofc ;) ) is that it's called "UBUNTUgamerz" .
I don't have anything against Ubuntu, I use it myself but it's just another GNU/Linux distro.
And as we know games run on all distros, there is no need to create a sub comunity for Linux gamers.

Looking farther I realize it's another domain name for the same website..
You got 3 names :
http://www.linuxgamezoo.com/
http://www.linuxgamestore.com/
http://ubuntugamerz.com/

I think you should pick the best name out of three (linuxgamezoo) and stick with it (meaning publish your site by this name).

Other thing I can advise it BE ORIGINAL !
There are already several linux gaming websites - some on gaming news, some on free gaming projects, some have a gaming list - create something unique, there is no point in recreating the same game lists over again.

Publish interviews with the developers for example.
Make a "how to develop/how this game was made" or something...

MaximB...a how to for indie Linux game developers would be an awesome implementation.

I've been looking for a how to develop games specifically for Linux and though I've found a few resources like Programming Linux Games (pub 2001) & Linux Game Programming (pub 2002) alot is lacking. Dead or inactive sites like Linux Game Development Center which doesn't appear to have been updated since 2002 is one example.

As for the name of the site, linuxgamezoo works. Though, (and yes I understand it's been up only 4 days) it's a bit too dark, maybe a graytone

Yes David C. raises a good point. I hope http://ldn.linuxfoundation.org/ takes up the challenge though.

Ok Max

I took your advice and made the main domain to get to the site LinuxGameZoo.com
and re listed everything.. I do agree the site needs a cleaner look and the dark theme seems well a little clunky I guess i will be working on that over the weekend! :)

Another idea LGZ - look into contacting the authors of the two books I mentioned in my previous post and inquire if they'd be interested in providing updated information based off their books or in depth HOWTOs a basic game design & programming for beginners, etc. Hopefully, without charge and holding to the idea of open source/open community.

The worse that can happen is they decline.

David,

I will definitely do that. I really love the Linux community.. I started with Linux back in 92 till about 99 and then broke away for a bit Ubuntu finally got me re-interested in the community and the OS again.. I'm hooked!! Since I installed on my machine a few months ago. I carry around a WUBI Installer with me and have installed it on about 30 others peoples computers out of the 30 people 25 made the OS their primary OS so this tells me a lot..

Why a second thread of this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1133309)?

You could put the effort you do in self-promotion and put it toward on making the site worth going to. Why does it require registration now also? How is a HL2 combine representing Linux gaming when it's a well-known Win32-only game?

linuxgamezoo

Hi Charmy

Answers to your questions..
1. If you would have read the site its only been open since the 19th.. Its mostly Developer driven and a lot of the developers have already responded to their email interviews that will be posted shortly.. Also its user driven.. If someone needs help or any questions I'm happy to help them so until someone posts there ????? Registration is free BTW

2. Once again If you would have read the site.. We support any game that can be run properly on any of the Linux based operating systems and if you cant get it to run.. We will show you how.

3. Yes we are building content everyday and writing all original content instead of importing it in from some other place.. Also I don't see where we wrote any articles about Half life 2. If you would have fully read the story you would have seen that it was not about HL2 but greedy commercial game developers making it impossible to finish a game since you have to buy the next sequel and how unsatisfying that can be..

If your knowledgeable about gaming or you are a developer.. why not help support the system.. Also we are going to be hosting repositories for a few developers that are writing pure Linux based games I rather give the free bandwidth to them and also let people that contribute to the board have full access to all the other files on the system.. Registration is free.. However I have been running boards for years and I know what file lechers can do in a matter of days to to an OC48.. I protect my users this way and also ensure the people that contribute have unhindered access to files and have a pleasant time on the system.. Sorry to say but this site was completely put up in two days and will continue to be refined though out its lifetime. Prob wont look a bit like it does now six months from now.

I started using Linux back in 89 and have made many contributions to the community in the past to the tune of thousands of dollars a month in bandwidth when I was an ISP and remember long before the internet when I was a main Fidonet hub. I have seen many people that just have something to rattle off and just want everything perfect and pretty so they can leach without any type of contribution to the community or pick something apart. I really think the site is pretty nice for one guy whos over worked as it is putting it up in his spare time. Giving free bandwidth and forums away to those developers that need it and giving users a well informed place to go.. After all Charmy what have you contributed lately?

RTFM

I haven't gone that far, but I have whetted the interest of a few friends, even burned a few cds with 8.10 so they could try it out. A couple have installed the OS as dualboot on their laptops. One really like edbuntu and installed it on a netbook for his six year-old daughter.

Perhaps you could include links to the games' sites in your reviews (such as Blood Frontier).

Not a big deal, but it could help.

Yes Vadi it does look a lot different from the original site I had put up when you first viewed it. I had decided on that capture for the fact as I have gotten older i have a hard time with the ones like google. This one does seem to work to prevent spam though.. I can edit the colors that it swtches back and forth from.. I guess I will tweek that next to make it a little less harsh.. I do agree however it still can be easliy read and since you dont have to be a member to post comments I wanted it to be as easy as possible to leave a comment on site

Good Idea.. I mostly give links to the download area or if they dont have a deb version of the installer file I make a deb install for it when possible and put it up on my site for people to download most of the links to the downloads are witing the article however I do see the point of putting links to the main site as well.. Thank you!!

LOL pleasures of being 44 I got my first taste I would say in 83 briefly.. Did not start using it heavly until about the end of 92 or the begining of 93 since there was nothing else that could efficiently handle heavy server load.. As far as I'm concerned there never was, except for some flavour of Linux or Unix.. So for conilogical sake lets call it 93 to be safe!! :D
