Okay so I used my favorite FTP software Beyond Compare (http://bestwikiever.wikidot.com/Beyond_Compare). Just now I found out how to get it working in wine (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=726554), however there may be a time when I need to use it in VMWare again so I am still asking.
What would happen is I would use it within Windows 2000 and it would work for a while. After a while it would say "Connection refused" and then no internet in my VM would work, not even firefox. Rebooting the VM did nothing. Rebooting Ubuntu did help until the problem just happened again.
I was backing up my forum directory. I found if I did a few folder at a time it would work, but if I did the whole folder at once it didn't :(
I will try in Wine and see if it happens. I wonder if other FTP software running in a VM would cause this too...
PS I did it running Beyond Compare in Windows running directly (not in a VM) and it worked, I was able to do the whole forum directory. I was even able to do it in gFTP too...
