can you install any virus protection?

You can but it's generally not needed. Just type this in the terminal.
sudo apt-get install clamav

If you want the gui for ClamAv, you will also need Clamtk

If you dont like using CLI interface CLAMAV has, you can try Avast for linux.

Downloaded and ran it last week and guess what! It found a Windows worm on my filesystem! haha!
