Hi all,

Im not sure whether this is the right place to post, but here goes. I finally managed to pursuade my workplace to give up expensive microsoft solutions..partially. They now decide to make a virtual enviroment, which is all good, but we need some sort of basis on the clients to run "behind the scenes" I was instantly thinking linux of some kind, but would ofcourse ultimatly prefer giving microsoft the good old fluffy slipper and having ubuntu all the way around. Im aware that the regular ubuntu requires some 400megs ram and a whole lota hd space. So the question is this, does anyone know of a ubuntu-lite version? less demanding on ram and hd ?

thanks in advance :)

There are plenty of options.

Not really sure I understand what you are proposing, but I suspect you want something XFCE or LXDE based. Alonmg with Xubuntu, there are some community driven options:

http://www.pc-os.org/

Many others....

WattOS works much better than U-lite on my 1999 Dell laptop (P3 700Mhz /256MB RAM / 12GB HD / 12.1'' ).
Thanks to the energy saving options the battery (still the original!!) lasts approximately 2:20 hours. I noticed that U-lite needs less RAM than WattOS (Out of box, with X started, observed with htop: U-lite takes approx. 75MB, WattOS 105MB of RAM) and feels slightly more responsive. But the over all experience with WattOS is much better.

The package list makes more sense to me. For example wicd is way better than the network manager used by U-lite. Cant' remember the name of it, I removed it almost immediately.

Installation of WattOS is as easy as installing Ubuntu, unlike U-lite. My girlfriend just switched involuntary from XP to WattOS and she loves the simplicity and speed of WattOS. Concerning that she had a 1.6Ghz notebook with XP on it before I think this is a good reference.

I have tested a lot of distributions on that Dell (Zenwalk, U-lite, MiniME, Puppy, SliTaz, Xubuntu and a few more) over the last year. WattOS has, for my needs, the best balance between performance and user-friendliness. Of course there are more distros, I have not tested all of them and U-lite is still in progress (like WattOS). But I think WattOS is at the moment the best working light-derivate of Ubuntu.
