Hi,

I have started using the forums more recently and have noticed that forum staff and senior members seem to be quoting 24 hours as a reasonable period of time to have elapsed before a bump.

Thinking it might be a good idea for me to read the relevant section about this I tried to find it in the Code of Conduct and the FAQ. The trouble is I couldn't find it. I admit I only scanned each bullet and did a search for bump and 24.

Is it possible that someone could point me in the right direction please?

And if there isn't a section in the Code of Conduct could I suggest that it be added (or made more obvious if there is a section)?

Thanks,
James

My impression is that it's more of a convention than an explicit requirement in the forum code of conduct that we wait 24 hours.

Although we're a diverse group with a wide range of knowledge and experience, the person who has a solution might not see the thread immediately: if this is the case, patience is definitely an asset.

Thread bumping is commonly considered a breach of netiquette.

Be respectful of all users at all times. This means please use etiquette and politeness. Treat people with kindness and gentleness. If you do this the rest of the code of conduct won't need more than a cursory mention.

Would be nice to see this added to the forum code of conduct as a guideline. Many users will not realize this otherwise.

I have frequented many forums in the past and the 24 hour really isn't universal. If I didn't know it was 24 hours I would say that a reasonable time for bumping would be an hour.

It is more a recommendation and good practice than a real guideline. We have already discussed it and did not feel it needed a mention in CoC. You can find it in one of the stickies in FFH:

It would be hard to draw a line. Someone bumping their thread to keep it up on the top page is clearly annoying and this is what we try to avoid. Once every 24h is a good period to bump. Remember that after a bump, a thread has a reply and does not show up in the unanswered posts any longer.

Also, if you feel the urge to BUMP something, you can always pop into the BUMP thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=520091)... ;)

Though there is a convention with BUMPing there too. Please don't double BUMP, at least, not often.
