Two monitors with simultaneous but different function?

Hello, I'm trying to do this:

Surf internet and write emails on my notebook while watching a movie on a large external monitor connected to my notebook.

What I can do right now is that I can switch and choose between two displays, but could not figure out how to use both at the same time with different resolutions and make them do two different tasks.

Any suggestions? Maybe there is a dedicated program for that?
