I've got a macbook with a 1280x800 screen and an external 1680x1050. I'm able to get an extended desktop, however, it slows everything way down. I'd like to use just the external screen, but when I set it as such in System > Preferences > Display (or manually with xrandr, for that matter), the screen goes all static-y, except instead of being grey, it's the color of whatever I'm displaying. I'm able to use just the laptop screen or both, but not just the external monitor. I don't believe this problem is Jaunty-specific as I've run into it in the past, as far back as 7.10.

Any luck yet, I encountered this issue this weekend with my acer aspire one 110L.

I think all desktop effects need to be disabled to have 2 screens.

If you are running desktop effects then it will greatly reduce your performance. My nvidia 7600go has a hard time working when i have both 1440x900 monitors enabled.

I know it's not desktop effects. The same thing happens when I'm running wmii. It also happened recently while using Vista, so I think it's a hardware rather than software issue.
