I've had an Inspiron and Vostro for Ubuntu since feisty fawn, they've both had problems but have worked. Now, considering getting a new laptop. I like the Dell laptops, love ubuntu.
Which one have you had the most success with (all variants)?
I know every laptop model is different, but thought a poll with comments would be interesting...
(LATER NOTE: Tried to add a poll with six options - Inspiron, Latitude, Vostro, XPS, Precision, and OTHER - but I failed. Can someone repost this with a poll?)

The Mini 9 / Vostro A90 do well with Ubuntu. I have the Mini 9 & there are lots of folks asking about it when we use it. It is not just mini in size but in price too. The Vostro A90 is $199 today.
It really depends on how you will be using your laptop. A Mini 9 is not for everyone.

I have an Inspiron 1420 that originally came with Windows Vista. The microphone port on Ubuntu does not appear to work. This is with both Intrepid and the Jaunty RC. Other than that, it seems to work fine.
Edit: I should also add that I had a problem with my wireless not working unless I was much closer to the router than I should have needed to be. This happened after I upgraded Ubuntu from Intrepid to the Jaunty RC, but it could have been an upgrade problem.

I have had nothing but awesomeness with a base-level Dell Inspiron 6000 (no Bluetooth, 512mb Ram, Intel Extreme Graphics 2). Everything worked out of the box including wifi, sound, video and Ethernet. Runs Compiz fine (better now I upgraded to 1gb ram).

I have Dell Inspiron 640M (Intel 945GM, Core Duo E2400, 512 MB Ram, Intel Pro 10/100 Ethernet) laptop with MS Windows XP preinstalled.
Ubuntu 8.10 runs out of the box and I did not require to configure even for the wifi card. I recommend Ubuntu 8.10 for all who possess Dell Inspiron laptops.

My dell vostro 1710 works really well.
* Core2Duo T8300
* Nvidia 8600M GS
* Dell minipci Wireless-N
works almost perfectly. The only problem I've had was with the touchpad/keyboard not working sometimes but that is easily fixed by adding i8042.reset to the end of the kernel boot line.

I wish it (wubi ubuntu 8.10) for my Dell Inspiron 1100...I've tried twice to install it but it just won't work. It doesn't give me any error messages...but it does not completely load the ubuntu OS. It goes through the process to the very end but then when I reboot after the install all it does is take me to a blank white screen where I can see the mouse pointer and then hangs there doing nothing. Ugh; and I really want to try Linux :(

you may want to try removing compiz if you cant get to the desktop by recovery mode

I have a 1505 and a mini 10 both running 8.04 perfecting, even Suspend works correctly. And the camera on the mini is nice with Skype.
