I had some package damage (don't ask), and mostly repaired things, but now on boot or unsleep, the computer hangs for about 30 seconds. During boot this is during the progress bar. During unsleep there is just a white flashing underscore character on the upper left hand corner.

Is there some way to get the old style cascade of boot messages, so I can see what part of the boot is taking so long, and maybe fix it?

OS: the ubuntu that came on the Dell Mini 9 - I think 8.04.
