I found this[1] quite insightful and considered contacting canonical so they can act legally if they want to, but I thought this would be a waste of their time (they probably are very aware of the problem). Instead, I decided to post it here, thinking that Dell (or Canoncial, or someone close to them) people may be looking here from time to time.

Dell Ubuntu support (ie Dell people you call when you are in trouble) seem to have been forwarding people to LoCo groups, instead of actually helping them or paying Canonical to provide support to the consumers whose problems they cannot resolve...

[hope this is the correct place to post this.]

If I recall correctly, Dell provides hardware support for their ubuntu-shipped systems. They do not nor have they provided software support.

Or, you need to locate the Ubuntu-specific Dell hotline #.

I think the real problem is that Dell don't just put a serious warning to buyers of ubuntu loaded systems, that they will not provide any help whatever...I spent a whole afternoon getting shuffled from India to Europe to Canonical to "call waiting" before some Dell guy in Canada--who answered the phone in French--took pity on me and reminded me in a very friendly way that Dell was hardware, and I needed to get off the phone, and get back online, and then he gave me a couple of tips on how to reset my router, and cheered me up, which is what I really needed ;-) ...

For some reason I knew most of this, back when I loaded linux on my own box...it was only because I'd bought it "readymade" from Dell that I had expected more...

The truth is, I love ubuntu, and would have still gotten a mini9 anyway, and all of the problems I had w/routers and stuff, eventually got solved right here, but I had to get back into a certain way of looking at things. And funny, is that I'm grateful to Dell for making this, and I know there are lots of linux guys working there who put a lot of time and effort into getting us a cool little netbook...I think they'd sell just as many or more, if they'd just bluntly tell us that they don't support the OS, and that most of the problems that seem *Dell* related, are usually just OS problems which can be solved better on here...
