How do I get to have Cairo dock running on the desktop immediately after startup?

I think you go to System>Preferences>Startup Applications. Then click "add" and for name put Cairo Dock, and for command put cairo-dock, and then for comment, put something like "a linux dock" (this doesn't matter). Then click "add".

Edit: I don't think "Startup Applications" is in Intrepid. I have it in Jaunty. I suppose you could get Ubuntu Tweak and add the startup entry. Sorry for not being very helpful.

In Ibex and before you would call Startup Applications System> Preferences> Sessions.

lib and michael are both correct just go to System>Preferences>Sessions> click add then put in cairodock in both fields close out and restart session

in Cairo-Dock2 : right-click -> Cairo-Dock -> launch on startup ;-)
