Hi,
don't know if that is the right section to ask, so move it if it's wrong here.
Anyways. I'm looking for royalty free music for a small non-profit project. I found a few sites where it costs a fee to download the music and some that are free to download and use. But I really only find very few things and often it's not even exactly good music, more like an assault on ones ears.

I must be blind or too stupid to find. Well, I know I'm not stupid and I at least see enough to drive a car. So, what's the "trick" to find good and free music?
Would love to get some links to sites where I can find that.

Thanks a lot,
L&G

i don't know any tricks but try search in google about music under artistic or creative commons and maybe you'll be lucky...

check this page too-- http://diveintomark.org/archives/2006/09/13/mix-tape :guitar:

Very good link for the fact that it's not a trick ;) haha

Actually, this link already helps a lot, thanks a bunch for that.
If there are more suggestions I would like to know. For now, back to the search in hope of finding more.

Try the Audio Portal (http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/) at Newgrounds... I know NG is kind of an "immature" site, but there's actually some pretty good music there. :)

(And no, I don't visit NG anymore...)

I believe Jamendo is all creative-commons stuff.

Another Jamendo recommendation. I got the huge bulk of my classical music off of there.

I've been aware of Jamendo (and I do really enjoy it) for some time now, but not of Newgrounds. Thanks for the link :)

Problem with Jamendo for me is that there's like no video game music on it.

yeah well, video game music is copyrighted work and would go against their cause for the site. There are other sites specializing in that area, and they wouldn't be royalty free anyway

Thanks a lot guys. That is amazing. I knew that there must be more out there.
How could I not find all that on my own?

Thanks again, you guys rock.

i've been interested in netlabels for almost 10 years now. i don't know what kind of music you need, or for what purpose, but here's a few sites that blog about new, FREE, and mostly creative commons license, music!

http://blog.foem.info/

http://www.phlow.de/netlabels/index.php/New_Netlabel_Releases

both of those links are updated daily with new music in countless genres. i say just find a title or artist which catches your eye and download away.

Jamendo is about music released under creative commons licenses.

By definition a "signed" artist has signed a (almost universally exclusive) licensing deal with a record company, which in my experience pretty much eliminates the possibility of participating in Jamendo. In fact, I discovered after joining that members of ASCAP, BMI, or any other performing rights organizations could not participate in a lot of the programs on Jamendo (ssh, don't tell on me; my jamendo tracks aren't registered with ASCAP anyway...).

The whole reason someone "signs" with a record company is to collect royalties, so no, you aren't going to find royalty free tracks from "signed" artists.

WOW, thanks again. This is so much now I guess it'll need a few people to search through it all. :guitar:

i don't know what kind of music you need, or for what purpose,...
I didn't specify that because different things will be needed. From plain background/coffee break/lounge kinda deal to music for short clips. It's for conference by a non-profit organization that usually barely covers the cost so that it's accessible for the target audience.
Since it's all run by volunteers for volunteers, the organizers are looking for a way to cut cost. And since I'm a guitar playing geek they thought I must know where to find some... :D
Well, now I do. ;)

So, thanks again, everybody. That is really hot stuff.

What about CCMixter (http://ccmixter.org) for music and FreeSound (http://www.freesound.org) for sound effects?

Don't know if Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org) was already mentioned, but you can find a LOT of free music in there. Check it out.

While not specifically listed as "royalty free", TraxInSpace.com (http://www.traxinspace.com) offers music which you can freely download.

On some occasions I have contacted artists and asked if I could use their music in a project and most of them allow this in exchange for a link/credit. It was originally a MOD archive and has been around for over 10 years.

You CAN find legitimate royalty free music on http://www.skreemr.com/ but you usually have to dig around through the not so legitimate music :(

Audiomicro.com offers original Royalty free music and sound effect. you can get full length Royalty-Free music tracks (Pop, Rock, Modern Country, Punk, Metal, World Music etc.) and sound effect (eg. Game Sound Effects ,Animal Sound Effects ,Electronic Sound Effects, Nature and Weather Sound Effects, Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) Sound Effects, Sports Sound Effects etc), which is actually about as cheap as you will find on the web for professionally produced royalty-free tracks.
