View Full Version : Urban Terror, realistic?

I played this game for a little bit about a year ago and recently put it back on to play, I got sick of Battlefield 2 crashing on me all the time. I understand why people love this game, but exactly how in the heck is it in any way "realistic"? I mean, most of the time it's just a free for all fragfest, reminiscent of my old Quake days. People double tapping, wall jumping, etc...I mean, I'm all for that, but to market the game as even "semi-realistic" is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.
Are there any truly semi-realistic games for linux out there like BF2 (no wine please, I haven't ever gotten anything to work correctly in wine)? I would really like to fill the void of BF2 with a linux native FPS. America's Army doesn't look promising to me

QuakeWars: Enemy Territory is probably closest to BF2 gameplay but in no way realistic.
Realism-wise, Americas Army or True Combat Elite

There are also "realism" mods for UT and UT2004

I second True Combat Elite. That's really one of the most realistic shooters I've ever played.

Thank, True Combat Elite definitely looks promising. I was never into the Counterstrike-esque sort of games, so I may or may not like this one. I'll definitely give it a try though.
OK, so I installed Enemy Territory and I guess it runs fine (lost the server a few times for some reason). How do I go about installing True Combat?! I have searched Google and the TCE website and found no instructions...I'm at a total loss. :-/

You'll have to download the 0.49 zip version and the 0.49b update, which you can find here (http://www.tcelite.net/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,40/func,select/id,9/). As far as I remember you'll have to extract it to the enemy territory folder. There's probably a README file in the zip which should help you out.

After instaling the mod and update launch it from console
et +set fs_game "tcetest"

The readme was not helpful in any way. Which folder do I extract it to?

Use cedega for BF2 just saying....
Anyways, I find urban Terror to be fun as heck realistic or not :p.
If you must have a realistic game though I think tremulous is realistic to a certain extinct.

If I want to play a windows game I will just boot into windows...I have no reason to fiddle endlessly with wine or cedega. But yes, Urban Terror is fun, but I get bored of it too easily...I need something with more realism.

No realistic gore in any games, that's sad. SoF is the only exception I know, but it's so old.
Come on, crysis has the most photorealistic graphics I ever seen, but when you shoot a Korean guy with a shotgun,
there will be just a tiny splat of blood, and the body remains 100% undamaged!? And the tiny blood effect is turned off by default.
What's the problem, ethics and morality?

Enemy Territory is the only one I am aware of, but I'll also check out the other ones mentioned here. Still new to Ubuntu :)

To install true elite all you have to do is download the run file from http://www.liflg.org/?catid=6&gameid=52 after installing et of course :) . After it has completed downloading right click properties and under permissions check run as executable program. Then open a terminal, browse to the directory where you saved the .run file (eg cd Desktop), and type "sudo ./true.combat.elite_0.49b-english-4.run " without quotes of course and ur done :)

Seems like Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory was installed by another user.
You have to install True Combat: Elite as the same user who did install Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.
Any help please?

Urban Terror is, okay.
I prefer Counter-Strike 1.6 to be honest ;)

Uninstall then reinstall enemy territory, there should be an uninstall script in usr/local/games/enemy territory. If you can't get the script to work, then just delete the folder. And when it is installing, install it in the default directory :)
Btw you should really try urban terror, imo it is much better than true combat elite.

I tried that, still didn't seem to work. I did install to the default directory too. I will try the script, if there is one.

It is fun, but it's just ridiculous the way people hop around. I can only stand so much of the game when the person I'm trying to shoot is bhopping all over the place.

Come on, Crysis has the most photorealistic graphics I have ever seen, but there's a gigantic alien ship that freezes over an entire island!
What's the problem, creative writing? ;)

When I said it has good graphics, I ment it was technically advanced engine.
The graphics don't matter but it is very advanced game engine, it has realistic physics, animations, AI, etc etc.
So technically they could have made ultra-realistic gore too, but they didn't.
Doesn't look right when everything else is so high-quality and polished but the gore is not.
And that's just one game. There are thousands of games like that.

I actually don't care for graphics that much. I think there is an overemphasis on graphics and sometimes the gameplay lacks because of it. I'd rather play Half Life 1 over some newer games any day.
I've kind of given up on True Combat...I can load it and run it, but I can't join any servers and can't enable punkbuster. This is too much trouble than I care for.

Has anybody gotten this running under 64-bit 9.04? I can install W:ET just fine, with sound (BTW if you have no sound try setting the sound to 'very high 44khz' within the game's sound settings, then quit and start it again) but whenever I try to install TC:E it says
