View Full Version : Logo needed for a new program (package creator)

Hi all,

I'm starting a new project - it's a program that will help you create Ubuntu packages (.debs). This'll be useful for theme artists (no more odd shell scripts or manual installation), software developers (packaging the program wouldn't involve hours spent on learning debian packagers) and people who don't want to install from source but a package.

The first release, 0.1, is pretty much ready - but I forgot that there is no logo :p . Would anyone be interested in doing a logo?

Sizes needed: SVG + the standard icon sizes: 16x16, 24x24, 32x32, and 48x48.

In regards to the style, not something too cartoony or silly please (I'm hoping that the application will benefit a wide variety of users) - otherwise you're free on your own.

0.1 announcement: http://giftwrap.tuxfamily.org/index.php?post/2009/05/28/GiftWrap-0.1-is-here%21

The tool sounds really interesting. Do you happen to have a website for it?

I can't help you with the logo, sorry.

I could help with a logo?
What kind of theme, size etc would you want it in?

I'll give it a shot. Do you have any kind of guidelines for what I should do? Colours/ideas for the logo? You want something realistic or a bit more cartoon-ish?

I'd prefer the Tango theme, and size would preferably be SVG + the standard icon sizes: 16x16, 24x24, 32x32, and 48x48.

In regards to the style, not something too cartoony or silly please (I'm hoping that the application will benefit a wide variety of users) - otherwise you're free on your own.

My fallback idea would be this quick hack - .deb icon + the "star" they put on icons signifying new stuff.

Ok; I'll see what I can come up with.

Glossy?

Look at icons in /usr/share/icons/gnome to get an idea ;)

alright.
sorry; i haven't made anything yet. Just been real busy :/

How's this?

It's a bit quick, but if you like it I'll give it some more polish.

I like the box, but the start looks a bit off, don't you think?

You don't have to include it necessarily too, anything that signifies that this creates, and edits deb packages would do.

Yeah the star was a very quick jobbie. I just wanted to know if it was the kind of thing you were after before I got too happy with it.

I'll throw around some ideas and see what else I could try. Maybe having the box open and having lines of code flowing into it or something. Dunno how that would work as a small icon, I might try different things for different sizes.

Is this going to be anything like the Deb Creator (http://debcreator.cmsoft.net/) project?

Vadi

Actually, the 0.1 release is a fixed-up version of Debcreator ;)

(the thing didn't work anymore, author inactive, so I took it, fixed up, got new ideas & rebranded)

I didn't spend a lot of time on this. It's just a concept at this point. Various things need to be adjusted, such as, the 22px and 16px icons. Plus, I'm not too sure I like the red arrow. Perhaps yellow or green would look nicer. However, I think it get's the point across. ;)

I know my opinion isn't really that important but I like that:lolflag:

Indeed, good concept heathenx - I think that communicated the idea well too.

That looks great!
My first thought was, since it creates .DEB files, to include some kind of Debian logo. Like:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/BreatheIconSet/Submissions?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=system-software-install3.png

Anyway, heathenxs artwork is much more in the Tango style.

Just my 2 cent - I'm really looking forward to this application, keep up the good work.

Very nice work MadSRH. I like your illustration of the box. Very realistic. :)

Here's another that I piddled around with. I attempted to draw a shipping envelope but I'm not sure that's what it looks like in the end. Tried to keep things simple. Again, since this is a concept I made no attempt to adjust the 16px and 22px icons for better visualization.

personally i prefer the gears to the cd, i think it's somehow misleading (in the end it's not a distro-creater, is it?).

heathenx's first attempt is the best in my (completely irrelevant) opinion :)

heathenx
April 15th, 2009, 10:57 AM
Alright. Here's one for the gear heads. ;)

Yes, a CD is commonly associated with a LiveCD, but come to think of it, a gears doesn't make much sense to me.

But I do like the logo; the envelope is a nicer touch on it (everyone uses boxes for everything already!).

I wonder what the Debian logo might look like instead of the CD or gear. Hmm...

Very nice work MadSRH. I like your illustration of the box. Very realistic. :)

...

I didn't create that! Sorry for not pointing that out. Oliver Scholtz is the author. It's from the Breath Icon Set https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/BreatheIconSet/Submissions

Again, sorry for not making that clear from the start 8-[

I don't think a Debian logo would do, as that would have associations that might hamper the image in the future.

heathenx, I'm hoping to release on friday or saturday - do you think that would be possible?

heathenx, I'm hoping to release on friday or saturday - do you think that would be possible?

I got the impression that the icons that I submited weren't favorable. Unfortunately I haven't had time to come up with another concept. I made some boxes in Blender today hoping to spark some inspiration but I ran out of time. I think I was trying to illustrate something regarding a "package application" with different "packages". I don't think I succeeded. :(

http://misc.heathenx.org/packapp/boxes_04_small.png

Anyway, I had second thoughts in the end. Perhaps it could be used for a banner on a website or maybe I'll just shelf it for another day. It's a little too busy anyway.

Nevertheless, I can probably help with some things tomorrow if you need it right away. You'll have to be specific with me though. ;)

I like both Sand & Mercury's logo (but the star is a bit off) and your envelope (but not the gearhead so much).

If both have any thoughts, let me know by tomorrow, so I'll be able to decide. Is it possible to get the source svg's also?

heathenx
April 16th, 2009, 10:01 PM
The SVG's of those that I already submitted can be found here:

heathenx

Alright. I tried using the star from Sand & Mercury's icon. Although, I don't know what a star is supposed to represent.

http://misc.heathenx.org/packapp/packaging_app_tango_heathenx_05.png

Again, I didn't waste time fixing the 16px and 22px icons since this concept might not interest you. ;)

Vadi
April 17th, 2009, 08:39 AM
Well, look here: http://people.freedesktop.org/~jimmac/icons/

You'll see that icons suffixed with -new have a lil' shining star on them.

Or maybe we should just go with wrapping (a red ribbon)? Tough choices.

heathenx

I see.

Here's a Gnome:

Great! The envelope + gnome star will go great. Would you be needing to adjust it on smaller sizes?

heathenx
April 17th, 2009, 11:37 AM
Well, I don't necessarily have to adjust anything if you think it looks alright. It's your icon after all. May need to tweak the white strokes but other than that it's pretty recognizable. What do you think?

heathenx
April 17th, 2009, 12:11 PM
Minor revisions to 16px and 22px icons.

You can find the svg's in the same "Link" dir as my previous post. :)

Okay, thank you. And license? I know CC-BY is packaging-friendly, if that's OK with you.

...I forgot. Let's us know when you get your application finished. I make debian packages for myself on occasion and I might find your application useful.

Vadi
April 18th, 2009, 09:40 AM
Yes of course. The first version won't do icon packs yet though, just an autotools based program will do (with some previous packaging experience, at this point). But it is on the roadmap ;)

Sorry. Was thinking of taking advantage of ubuntugeeks offering for FOSS project hosting, but he seems to be quite a busy person so I'll be sticking to tuxfamily as initially planned (and I didn't want to releast at first and change links after. You know that can be a pain)

Got finals this weekend though, so I'll definitely release by Wednesday now that I decided to stick to tuxfamily :/
