http://start.ubuntu.com/9.04/
It gets uglier and uglier as it goes.
http://start.ubuntu.com/8.04/ was the best, http://start.ubuntu.com/8.10/ was ugly, and now this?
Oh well, at least it won't take long to load on a really really slow connection.
(Don't know when it was put up, sometime in the last two weeks.)

That heron was a gorgeous piece of artwork. It has gone downhill since.

8.04 had "Everything efficiently on one page" technology.

The reason is simple. People won't keep the 8.04 as start page for long. Too much info. You really don't need to see that page with the info every single day.
Some people would keep the minimalistic google page. Which means more money for Canonical.
IMHO 9.04 is the best of those 3.

If people wanted a minimalistic Google page, they would make http://google.com/ their homepage, as it supports Google Accounts, changes the logo on special days of the year, and has other options such as Images, Videos, and News, which is actually missing and impossible to access from the Ubuntu Start Page.
Plus the Ubuntu homepage is damn ugly! Google is simple, yet the artwork is elegant; but Ubuntu's webpage style looks like it was made by a novice website developer that learned only how to add solid colors and definite shapes to his/her site.
So in short terms: the Ubuntu start page sucks.

Maybe it should show up once when a user first opens Firefox, then revert to a minimalistic Google page, then no one can complain (apart from the odd one person).

+1 I personally like 8.04 too startpage it contains the forum link and other cool links. Even on 8.10 set it to 8.04 while was using girefox. If go back will do it again probably.
