I was at first modifying dust with a couple of tweaks, and then it turned into a completely new theme. But that not my problem. My question is: How do you change the background of the statusbar? Can it even be an image?

In my experience you can't. You can't even change its color, it is just relief shadows on top of the GtkWindow Widget. Not an expert, but i tried without success.
