I have 8.04 desktop and there is no problem with wpa.
And I decided to upgrade to 8.10 server. Hardwares are exactly same. I copied contents of /etc/network/interfaces to new ubuntu.
It's well working with open network(no wpa).

->Some noticeable messages from /etc/init.d/networking restart
------------
