View Full Version : [ubuntu] GPU too hot? Nvidia geforce 7000m

April 10th, 2009, 12:23 AM
I have the sensor applet on my main panel in Gnome, and I've been watching the temperatures to see what happens. I'm not entirely sure what the temps really mean, but I have run across some worrying discussions elsewhere which suggest that my GPU may be too hot.

It normally sits around 75-80 C, and often shoots up to 90 (and sometimes over 110). Is that normal? What search terms should I use to find out? I have tried to call Acer customer service but they had even less of a clue than I do.

The CPU temperature is usually 45-55, or sometimes lower. That doesn't seem to be so worrisome.

I'm a bit nervous because my previous laptop died after overheating, so I kind of like to keep an eye on such things!

I don't do anything much with this computer except surfing, word processing, etc. and I don't run compiz at the moment. The most graphics-intensive thing I do on a regular basis is create maps in qGIS or edit photos in GIMP.

Thanks for any help or pointing me in the right direction.
