I have had this problem on my Sony NR430 at my girlfriend's place... even using "connect to hidden network..." and manually configuring did not help. The laptop could not see the network and refused to connect even with all the relevant information. One time, rotating the router 90 degrees made the network "visible"... but two other times, I could only connect with an ethernet cord.

Good Luck!

If you cannot see any networks and know that some are around, then it sounds like a driver issue with your wireless chip.

See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6183681 on how to make your case a little better specified.
