Hello!

I bought a Serval Performance last year (the Combal FL92 model) and so far it's been doing great.

I noticed there is a new BIOS upgrade available from the Compal website. I tried to run the .exe under a windows installation and got the following error:

cannot flash if memory managers (e.g. EMM386) present

Is there any way to upgrade the BIOS? Is this best left untouched?

Regards,
Bllz

Most BIOS upgrades provide support for Windows.

So, unless a) you are running windows - and it sounds like you are, and b) the upgrade is fixing a known problem that you have, you usually can safely ignore it.

Typically, if an upgrade makes a difference under Ubuntu, we will recommend it and provide instructions for performing it.

The problem is, if you do an un-recommended upgrade, and it hoses your bios -- thus hosing your machine permanently -- it would not be covered under warranty.

It's your machine, so you can do whatever you want with it. Just be aware of the potential risks.

Point taken =)
I do have a windows install on the computer for the odd task that requires it, but my primary OS is Ubuntu. I'll leave well enough alone!

Thanks, Tom!
