I just slapped an ubuntu partition on my macbook 4,1 and i notice that when I am running ubuntu the sound is quite low. I have everything maxed and it is still hard to hear. Is there any remedy for this?

Your MacBook is the polycarbonate one, right? Did you try changing around your sound drivers in the sounds pane? (I think you can do that, not on ubuntu right now) I know on my MacBook 3,1 the sound goes louder than what OS X allows-and under linux it doesn't find the third speaker for midtones.

Try here, the original fix for sounds on the 2,1 MacBook:

There's also a spot about 4,1 MacBooks having weak sound, which would describe your problem:

1. install the package gnome-alsamixer 2. Run Applications -> Sound & Video -> GNOME Alsa Mixer 3. Uncheck the mute box for "surround"
