I've recently found a good deal on 4GB of dual channel RAM. It's actually cheaper than 2GB of dual channel RAM. Apparently, my motherboard only supports 1GB per socket. What would happen if I installed this RAM?

If I understand correctly, it is a 4gb chunk and your socket can only hold a 1gb. It simply will not detect it.

it's 2 2GB "chunks" (dual channel) and the socket can only hold 1GB.

It won't detect the whole thing?
