montage of multimedia problems

I am fairly new to ubuntu, and when I first started a few weeks ago, everything on the system was working smoothly. Recently, however, all aspects of multimedia have had problems; all video is extremely slow and doesn't have any sound, and any music player I download will not play any songs. I don't get any error messages, and I know it's not a problem with the sound card because the login sounds work and it works in hardware testing.

Did you update your kernel lately? Try using the last kernel that worked fine. You can choose the kernel from GRUB menu.
