I'm running an HP 1020 on Ubuntu 8.04 and it works great. Until I run out of paper in the middle of a job. Any subsequent print jobs appear to get set to run OK, but then just disappear. Absolutely nothing will print until I reboot. I tried restarting cupsys, which it does OK. But still, Ubuntu won't print unless I reboot.

There's a trick we used on Windows desktops, which was restarting the print spooler service. I was hoping restarting CUPS would work similarly, but it does not. It's got to be a service-related problem, but I can't figure it out. I've also tried unplugging the printer, turning the printer off, and even throwing salt over my shoulder (for good luck), all to no avail.

It's a real pain to have to reboot every time the printer runs out of paper. Any suggestions would be helpful.

OK, looks like this combo WORKS.

1) Unplug USB cable to HP 1020

2) Restart CUPS: sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

3) Plug printer USB cable back in

Printer works now w/o rebooting.

If anyone cares.
