View Full Version : [ubuntu] Spin Down Up Idle External USB Drive

April 7th, 2009, 11:38 AM
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 64 on an HP6715b laptop. I have a USB external hard drive (drive itself is SATA) that is in an aftermarket enclosure. I would like to be able to spin down the drive after it has been idle for a specified length of time and be able to spin it back up if it is accessed. How do I do this? I tried hdparm but it seems it works only with IDE's. Any help would be much appreciated!

Maybe a little bit late, but check http://mythtv.org/wiki/Spindown_drives. Works like a charm for me on external usb drives and 9.04.
