Hi im wondering how many of you play Never Winter Knights both as single player and on line. Hopefully with a group of Ubuntu Linux NWN players may help others solve any problems butter better still get together and play on a server as a group.
Also feel free to post servers that you enjoyed and posibly a little description.
Currently I Play Champions of Vydor (http://www.princewally.com/index.php) online which a fun server. Its sort of close to pnp hack and slash with quests.

Used to play NWN single back in my Windows days. Had an almost working Linux install on my old laptop (800 MHz, ATI Rage 128). "Almost" because it actually ran, but was so slow and choppy it was unusable. I guess it was because the ATI driver only offered 24 bits color depth, and NWN needed 32. I had RtCW running perfectly, so the 3D accel itself wasn't at fault.
Now I have a 2 GHz Pentium M with an ATI 9700, and I'm actually able to hibernate and wake up WITH the ATI-driver installed, so I will give NWN a spin again.

I used to, i backed up all my savegames and profiles, but it lost it's appeal to me. I completed the campaign like 3 times. I tryed several role-play servers, most of which had strict bogus rules and where you can actualy die permanently. A nice quick-combat server was NWKNIGHT, it's CTF and keep the throne and such. Two teams, gold and silver, each with respective armour. I kinda gave up on it as the people there were power junkies at creating the best possible characters, they all had SoU and HotU characters which i couldn't beat.
I tried lots of fan-created expansions from nwvault, some were realy great rpg's. I might play again some day.

I actually owned the game for over a year before I installed it... And the only reason I installed it on what I have now is because I found out it was Linux Native Compatable...
Now I play it almost every day at work to pass the time! Haven't tried online yet though... Will have to give your server a try.

I was thinking about purchasing the "Diamond" edition... especially since WoW is becoming more and more repellant to me.
Dunno if it is worth it though since NWN 2 is coming out soon...

I was considering getting the platinum editon. They named their editions after rare metals, there is nothing higher then platinum. And then I see diamond on the shelves now. Will probably get that instead.
NWN 2 is not being made by bioware and I know next to nothing about the publisher.
When it comes to games the one thing I always check is the hardware needs.
I still use the onboard video that came with my windows box, I haven't had a problem with it (starcraft, noone lives forever, hostile encounter) but I am not sure if it is enough for NWN. You guys still use onboard video hardware or have you all bought additional video cards ?
Intel 82845 Graphics Controller (There are like 5 versions I think mines GL)

The ubuntu system has a 3D Rage Pro so I ain't worried about it.

First off last time I read NWN2 is due out this year though dont have a specific month and is based on the 3.5 rule set which is much better and will problwable result in better game play. NWN2 is also based on a rebuild game engine which will probably mean it will stand truer to D&D rules and game play.

NWN will be cheap compared to NWN2 when it is released and the nature of the free servers will be playable for a very long time.

A friend of mine played Never Nights in windows with a intel onboard card but not shure if will work in Linux without some tweeking (mouse problem but there is a fix)

I play NWN single-play only. I own both the SoU and HotU expansion packs. If you enjoy really good story-driven modules, I highly recommend the Tales of Arterra modules. Part one is here (http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=modules.Detail&id=4046) and part two is here (http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=modules.Detail&id=4047).
I think they are two of the best user made modules I've ever played.

Some clarifications.
The Platinum edition of Neverwinter Nights has the Original, Shadows of Undertide and Hordes of the Underdark. Plus it comes with a rather thick manual, and you can find it in DVD or CD-ROM (it's 4 CDs).
The Diamond edition comes with the Original, Shadows of Undertide, Hordes of the Underdark and the Kingmaker module. It doesn't come with the thick manual (so it's $10 less than the Platinum edition was, at least when I bought it (40 for the platinum and 30 for the diamond). I'm not sure, but I think it also is available as DVD or CDroms.
I was wondering the same thing as the original poster, how many people play it here? I did have a small game set up on my server a while back playing the Pool of Radiance module with some friends, and it was a blast. I'd like to do something like that again, but all those friends have gone off to play WoW, which I think is lame.

They have 106 memebers and counting on the day they may have between 0 and over 20 players. There are also regulars that can realy help out and they have been there for as long as I have been playing that server. ALso you can do all the quests once a reboot wich is about twice a day so that realy helps.
Its not a huge world but a well done one a can be challenging. A lot of areas require groups so be warned as a newb you might die a lot at first.

you do have to do some tricks, like install the cursor update so you have mouse hardware acceleration (otherwise it will be very laggy).

I haven't ever had the laggy mouse issue, is that due to ATI drivers? Or maybe I just haven't noticed. I remember seeing the patch for it, but never tried it out, since I didn't have a problem.

The laggy mouse is mainly for slow vidio cards say like a Gforce2 where I had to install the mouse fix. I did not have this issue when I upgraded to a geforce mx4000.
Basicly its an issue where the frame rates drop realy low lagging the cursor there fore causing over controll making the game unplayable.

January 7th, 2006, 04:31 PM
That explains why I've never had the issue. When I played it on my Parhelia it would be slow if I enabled the shadows to full detail, and of course I had it running across three monitors each at 1600x1200. On my 6800GT I have ever setting to maximum and it runs silky smooth at 1600x1200. I need to play that game some more.... damn real life...

I love the Ranger/Arcane Archer combo. That was what i used the first I went through the expansions. I think I ended being a level 22 with him, after taking him through SOU and HOTU, as well as several player created modules. That's the great thing about NWN. You get tired of the OC and expansions and there's literally thousands more modules out there to play, some of which are really fantastic.
edit: Have they actually set a release date for NWN 2? I saw some screenies on bioware. It looks pretty awe inspiring.

I first tried the Druid, and played it so long ago it was before they really added the special classes. Now on the Original campaign I'm playing with a wizard. Damn is it hard. At the beginning it was literally a Kill one guy, save, kill another, save. Finally I got to the point where I can kick some ***. Though still sometimes if I get into a hand to hand fight, I can die pretty easily. But then that's what my Tenser's Transformation is for :D
The wizard has got to be the hardest to play in a single player campaign. I was going to play a Bard, but they changed the rules from 2nd edition to 3rd edition so much for the Bard that now they're just some annoying mage like thing, they used to have thief skills too.
I did start a Druid on the SoU module, and there are little things you can only find if you're a druid (like talking to the wolf in the town and finding out that there are other wolves trying to court her, and you can find a magical ring (if I recall). I want to get up to the point where I can be a shapshifter, those are fun :D

Wizards are always really really hard to play at first, but in the later levels tend to make everyone else look totally weak. I've never played a druid. Might have to try a new character out for that one...

Thieves are interesting to play too. Since every other needed class was picked the last time I played with friends, I played the thief. Then everyone was whining 'cause I would open the chest and take all the good stuff *laughs* I kept having to tell them, "I'm a thief, that's what we do? would you rather just spring the traps and die?" :D

I always liked playing a thief. Since I was in high school when I first started playing D&D, and because I was really into computers, I always equated thieves with the hackers and phreakers of the the early days of computing. People like Kevin Mitnick and such. Guys that I really admired at the time. That sort of stealthy, get in and get out undetected sort of thing. Fighters and Barbarians and such I always associated with the big dumb jocks I went to school with so I invariably stayed away from those classes.
Lol, funny when you look back at things like that.

Check Bioware's forums. That's a common error. I don't remember the exact fix, but apparently it happens frequently. I ended up installing by manually unzipping the disks, but I have the platinum edition and I don't know that that would work for you. Good luck, and keep at it, you'll figure it out!

http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=465007&forum=72&highlight=parachute That's the only thing listed on bioware's site right now, though I seem to recall that it's because you need some SDL libraries installed.
Try sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2debian libsdl1.2debian-alsa libsdl-gfx1.2-4 libsdl-image1.2 libsdl-mixer1.2 libsdl-net1.2 libsdl-ttf2.0-0
Those are the libsdl files I have installed. It's working fine here. Also it may be llooking for the libSDL library within the folder, and I don't know if the installer copies that over. it's in nwn/lib/.
The other question is... did you update it to the 1.66? An update could fix it as well.

My server isn't currently up, but generally you just load up the game, go to Multiplayer, then you'll probably have to create an account, then it will download all the public servers out there. If it's not a public server, then you can select Direct connect, then type in an IP address. Usually the game runs on port 5121, so it'd be something like 192.168.1.1:5121.

Anyone looking forward to playing Neverwinter 2 on Ubuntu? Right now I've got NWN 1 on my Windows machine, but I should be switching over to Ubuntu full time this summer (which means I'll be online with linux and NW2 when I get back to school in late August). Is it a bad thing to be planning my next character already?

Prc came out with a new version that has working psionics and many new classes and prestigue classes. Anyways right now I am copying NWN to a second NWN directory which I plan on installing the PRC rar. Not that ill find a server that has this but im planning on playing the nwn chapters as a Psionic.

Not last I checked. Pretty much the word was that it'd be released as DirectX 9.0c only. But then on the Faq (that was made during the initial announcement of it) it said that they were only adding DirectX to the rendering engine, and that it should still have the OpenGL path as well. Though who knows if they updated the OpenGL or not. You'd think it'd make more sense that if they were jjust going to drop OpenGL competely, they'd dump the whole engine and start from scratch.

had in setup and running perfectly in an hour and most of that time was extracting
followed this howto:
http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=469853&forum=72
had to make one mod to the nwn startup script
after the line:
#!/bin/sh
insert:
SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa
this makes the audio work through kde mixer

I didn't know about getting Alsa to work with Neverwinter Nights, though I never had much trouble with the sound. Maybe I'll add that to the HowTo to see if it helps anyone.

I am just about to re-install NWN on my machines. I don't think my laptop will handle it, but my old case downstairs will. I used to run Libranet, and had NWN running clean on it, so now I need to figure out if I should install NWN a new way on my Dapper machines. I just started looking around the forums and wiki pages to see if any NWN install guides were floating around. Any suggestions?
When I do get it up and running I will see if I can get back on the Avlis (http://avlis.org/) server for online play. I loved that place. It was full of fantastic gamers and DMs. I may also do some single player adventures. We'll see!

They really do need to make this a sticky somewhere, or add it to the Games wiki.

Yup, sadly it looks fairly unlikely that there'll be a linux client at this point, what with Atari's financial woes and all. Very sad, but lets add as much as possible to that thread on their forums - You never know, something may be done. Perhaps Atari will go under and a publisher with a bit more sympathy to gamers on systems other than windows might pick it up. ;)
At the very least, I'll be extremely reluctant to buy NWN2 if there's no linux server provided. And if there's no linux client... well, it'll then have to be one bloody awesome game for me to get it. :-/

For what it's worth, I planned to buy NWN2 to play it on linux.
Then I heard they 'upgraded' the engine from OpenGL to DirectX, to make it possible to run NWN2 on xbox.
Then I heard their xbox funding has been cut.
We have been cheated.

It would be cool if we make a Ubuntu nwn server for forum members. I don't know how many members have nwn, but a poll could give the picture on how many there are, also who's interested in a server like that.
This sounds great. If it server had capacity for like > 10 people, it would be great.

I was mad for NWN and SoU/ HotU when I was a windows user and I keep meaning to install it onto my Ubuntu install, but for the joy of having another game running natively.
If I did re-install it, I'd definitely want to play online in a perm. world.
Now, wheres that manual gone?

When I seen this thread I knew I would of had to post something about it.
Ok first off I started to play NWN back in January 2003. I first played it offline but didn't get far. Didn't care for it much at first. Then after about a month of not playing it I gave it another try, but online. I then fell in love with the game and played it hardcore every day for a year. I even joined a clan called KTR = Knights of Templar. It was a popular server of 200ish or more solid players, so the server always had from 20ish slow time to 30 to 40 on high times. It's still up and running as we type. It did die down lots. had some server problems and many more problems at once so it died kinda fast. but still roughly 15ish or so players still hang out on there sometimes. At the time I was in KTR there was about 60ish people or more. It was spread out on D2 also. well from that game after a few months I ended up on Wow for another year. But Wow I quit that cause of the ******** in the game. I can see that game dieing fast. For something that big they can't keep up with the servers or live support. Plus all the glitches it always have, specially in every new patch. NWN I can see playing again and don't mind hopeing on, but in Wow I just won't touch that game again. When NWN2 comes out I will for sure buy it. Plus loads of friends over on Wow, D2 and NWN will get it also.
Ohh I forgot to say, I use to host my own module for NWN for like 6 or 7 months 24/7 near the end. It was also in Social like Templars (KTR server). Called it Templar 2, I was seneschal at the time and did make it for them, at that time I was thinking of making KTR even bigger and more well known. Well bigger post then I thought again. :P As usual. So yea I played NWN and still don't mind it. For NWN2 I hope that I can play it on my new Linux box. (Just got linux last week sometime, so still a big time newb.)

I just got it installed again, this time running on Ubuntu 7.10 and I agree, the graphics are a bit dated. Still, I will be playing it for a long time come considering the glut of quality 3d rpgs for Linux.

NWN is a great game, and I've had more fun playing it than any other. I found a great RP server some years ago when I played on Windows, and now that I have another computer capable of running it I've found that the same group of players has set up another nice server after despairing of NWN2. If you like roleplay, and you like to have fun, check it out.
You'll find it under Andrune in the Roleplay tab. Requires SoU, HotU, and CEP2 to play. You can usually find 5 or so people on in the evenings, and I'm sure they'd appreciate more players.

I play and help to DM a mod called 3Towns :) we have 5 "out in the open" linux users there already (there was a poll on the forums) and we probably have 2 or 3 more who just don't go on the forums.
check it out sometime :) we are 5 years old, have over 500 active players, over 2000 registered forum users (players who may or may not be active) and a player limit of 110 at a time on 2 servers.

Guys, you should obviously check appdb (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=4118) (there's a guide on how to install it too, if it can be improved anyhow let me know). But yea, it's a little bit of a pain to set up, thats not only wine fault - the game is a bother to patch...

I bought the game shortly after I switched to linux full time from windows. (about 2 years ago). Im still playing it today, and have used it to get myself off of WoW. I signed up to play online in one of the persistant worlds, but I have never actually played online. Too much single player goodness to even bother. I played it more off and on, until I started playing D&D again with some friends, it rekindled my interest in NWN due to how closely it follows the rules.
