You're trying to say that within about two weeks time a couple of million people should switch from MS-XP to Ubuntu Jaunty to test the still fresh Ubuntu Jaunty beta ? :)

Don't mine me, but I'm a little slow. I have 3 computers; 2 will be 100% Ubuntu jaunty. The other is XP as a dual boot with Ubuntu jaunty. What exactly happens on 4-14; no more Windows updates? XP becomes vulnerable to virus attacks?
And.."Extended Support 4 XP Ends On 04-09-2014." What kind of support is given if not updates for the next 5 years?
Thanks.

There will still be security updates until 2014. This mostly affects IT Professionals and large corporate networks.

Who uses Microsoft support anyway?

The real question for Windows XP users is what will happen to Windows Activation when the various levels of support end?

Will users be able to activate Windows XP, Microsoft release a patch to no longer require activation or will Windows XP go the route of many other DRM schemes where users who legitimately purchased the software, music, ebooks etc will no longer be able to use them because the publisher decides to turn off the activation servers and no longer support that particular flavor of DRM?

XP has a flaw.

There's a patch you can apply to make it think it's in Safe mode when it's not.

Then it doesn;t bug you about activation.

What's worse is I've done it this way even WITH a valid license because it was easier than validating.

Wikipedia has the support end date for Service Pack 2 as July 13 2010 and Microsoft has Service Pack 3 support on their site ending 24 months after the release of the next service pack, or the end of the general support date, whichever comes first.

Yes there ways to crack the activation in XP and in many countries they are perfectly legal, but in other countries notably the United States with its draconian DMCA they are not. Microsoft needs to come clean on this. And by the way it is not just XP, it an issue with virtually every Microsoft product since 2000.

Everybody says it's good NOW. Do we remember the conversations about how XP was crappy back in 2001? I do.

The reason why XP is good is because it has 8 years of trial and error built into it. Device Driver support in XP is superior because it's been around so long. Anything that needed to function on it will. Not because it was shipped that way initally, but because Microsoft kept adding more features to make it compatible.

I've been running XP as a Limited User (I am in the Linux mindset) with all ports closed and actually like it.

Soon Windows XP
will be a bad memory
longing for its end.

Maybe those who type
With Initial Caps Throughout
know something we don't.

For those with fond minds
set upon XP's own dawn:
not all of us do.

XP soon will pass
the relay torch to Seven;
Vista's days draw short.

Think deeply on this:
Microsoft advertises
more for us than we.

Windows 7 is really a Vista service pack fixing what was screwed up in Vista. Leave it to MS to get paid for fixing their mistakes.

Wrong! Microsoft is actively developing a second service pack for Vista separately from Windows 7. It is currently in release candidate stage.
