Here's what I play with:
For first person shooters, you can purchase Doom3 from idsoftware then use their linux installer http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/. This is my current addiction since I didn't buy it when it first came out and have only been playing for the past several weeks. If Doom3 is already old news for you, Quake 4 just came out and has a linux installer on idgames as well (http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/quake4/). This is almost surely to be my next game.
Armagetron is an excellent version of the lightcycle game from Tron, which you can find in your apt-get repositories (after you enable the universe repositories).
Freeciv might not be as beautiful as Civ3 or Civ4, but it's a fun and challenging game, and you can find that in the universe repositories.
Soul Ride is a fun snowboarding game using OpenGL, and you can find that at TuxGames http://www.tuxgames.com
Other games that will work under Linux (perhaps after some configuration/installation fussing) are: Medal of Honour Allied Assault (and the expansion pack Spearhead), Unreal Tournament 2004, Neverwinter Nights (and its expansion packs).
Robin Hood, Legend of Sherwood is also very good strategy-like game that takes a little while to master, but is completely fun.
If you're not sure how your machine will handle some of these games or what they're like to play, I'd suggest going to http://www.tuxgames.com, downloading and installing the demo, trying the game out, then ordering what you like best.
I'm sure I'm missing a ton of excellent games, but I'm recommending only the ones I've tried and enjoyed. One place I check for info on games is http://happypenguin.org/.
Have fun!

A really popular free first person shooter you should give a try is Nexuiz from www.nexuiz.com
After extracting it go into the directory and look for nexuiz-*****-glx (I forget whats in the middle but i know it has nexuiz and glx in it) The just click it or ./nexuiz-***glx when in the nexuiz directory.

Most linux games out there I got working. Only a very few I've been unsuccessfull. If you know how to compile there's should be no problem.

If you have morrowind you can grab the loki installer here: http://www.liflg.org/?catid=7&gameid=38
The movie is a bit choppy, but after that it runs very smoothly.

Morrowind.
Maybe cuz of the hype that got to me of another cool rpg but I never actually played it longer than 4 hours or so. I got disapointed by it very quickly.
Maybe I should re-try it :P

Anyone know where I might find a Linux client for Diablo 2?
Thats a game I would love to play from my Ubuntu, without having to change to lamedoze all the time.

There was a post in these forums where someone explained how to get that game working under wine.
Do a forum search.
