This is driving me crazy.

I returned home today to find both laptops (mine and roommates) offline. I use Ibex, she uses hardy and we both use network manager.

I figured my router (Linksys wrt54g2) was to blame, so I rebooted that figuring it would fix it. It did not.

What happened (and what's happening now) is that neither computer will connect wirelessly. Wired is fine, but wifi is not.

When the wifi cards are turned on, the computer freezes and unfreezes every second or so.

Both recognize the network (and others), but neither will connect to our network (but will connect to others).

The freezing/unfreezing goes away when the cards are turned off.

I tried installing Wicd, but it doesn't fine ANY wireless networks.

I have a Vaio, she has a Dell, both laptops.

I'm using a desktop also running Ubuntu Ibex via a wired connection. It cannot connect wirelessly to our router, but can connect to other networks. The freezing/unfreezing problem doesn't happen with the desktop.

So what is going on and how do I go about fixing it?

EDIT:

This is how I got it working again: I unplugged the modem and then plugged it back in.

So now the question is HOW could the modem cause this problem and why would rebooting the modem fix it?
