my upgrade to jaunty took up a few hundred mb extra space, and i would like to free that up.
i think it may be related to installing amarok 2 and kde 4 libraries, i previously used amarok 1.4 and kde 3.5, i think that kde 3.5 libs may still be installed and taking a large amount of space, but i dont know how to find them.

I'm not sure what the best approach is, but one option would be to simply remove unused applications (using add/remove). The other approach would be to use Synaptic Package Manager to remove packages you don't need.
