Some time ago I used automatix to install acrobat reader. I've since dist-upgraded at least twice and automatix is long gone from my system (amd64 ubuntu 8.10). However acrobat reader (32bit) which I installed using automatix is still present in /opt/automatix. Automatix, acroread, acrobat, and variants do not show up in the package list when I search with Synaptics.

How can I cleanly remove it? Is it simply a matter of removing that directory tree and the menu item?

thanks.

Just remove the directory and the entry in the menu. If you want a newer version of Acrobat it is available in the Medibuntu (http://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu) repositories.
