I am running ubuntu version 8.10.
I am using a Netgear RangeMax WNDR 3300. I have tried with security set to NONE and with security set to WPA-PSK[TKIP] + WPA2-PSK[AES]. Friends with MACs and Windows laptops have not had a problem connecting. I am using Ubuntu on an old Dell 600M laptop.
It appears the radio is working OK as I got as far as getting wireless networks to show up under the Networking icon. The panel shows the ESSID and a signal indicator (orange bar). So, I assume that there is at least radio communication. In addition, ubuntu picked up the ESSID automatically.
But, when I select my wireless network and type in the passphrase in the panel that pops-up, nothing more happens. Below are outputs from

Also, while experimenting I changed the "hosts" entries under system->administration->network for wireless.
There were two entries like
127.0.1.1 foo-laptop
127.0.1.1 localhost
originally. Now, I cannot recover that same configuration. It wants to only have one or the other. Or, if I put them on one line they show up on one line and not on two separate lines that I saw before I started messing with it. Does this matter and if so how can I get things back the way they were?
