This link seems to be saying the Kyocera FS-920 auto-detects (Known autodetection signatures: Parallel Port or USB) and the author says it autodetected in Ubuntu 6.06

http://www.openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Kyocera-FS-920_2

Does this mean I can assume it will autodetect for Ubuntu 8.04?

The FS-920 can be bought for $200.

There is also a Kyocera FS-1010 Laser Printer on ebay for $125

http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Kyocera-FS-1010

According to this link directly above it also seems to autodetect.

I want a printer that autodetects Ubuntu 8.04 and hopefully 8.10 as well to print between 1500 to 2000 pages per year. Don't care about speed or quality that much but don't want it to jam much and be easy to unjam.

Which do you think is best?

My main concern is that these printers really will autodetect on Ubuntu since I don't feel confident to install drivers for them. I currently have a Samsung ML-2010 that recently died. I live in Australia.

I was also considering the Samsung ML-1640 since I read on the internet that it definitely autodetects on Ubuntu 8.04 but the Kyocera seems better due to cheaper running costs.

Running v_8.04.1: The HP laserjet 1300 has performed without error or gotcha. That includes a "web" upgrade from v_6.06.
