Linux Security vs. Microsoft

Why is it that linux is more secure than microsoft? I read somebody's signiture which said something like "I don't use microsoft, therefore I am not afraid to check my e-mail". I was just wondering why linux is more secure and what keeps microsoft from doing whatever linux does to be so secure?
