Hey, my headphone jack got damaged by an irrisponsible cousin, meaning that there is no more green insulation thingy left. Anyway, i dont want to use that damaged pport, so im thinking of getting a cheap USB sound card, like this one :

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/USB-2-0-to-Mic-Speaker-5-1-Audio-Sound-Card-Adapter-K49_W0QQitemZ280324862212QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Com ponents?hash=item280324862212&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A15|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Does it work nativly on ubuntu 8.10 ? Can i make it work ?

I cant chang my Soundcard, as im using a laptop...

Yep - I've used those too, I actually sell them on my site and it does work with Ubuntu.

I'll say its a decent sound device and very handy to use when your in a pinch, but if you do anything with games or music you might be disappointed as the sound is pretty high and "empty" sounding.

If you can afford to spend about 10 more dollars, I've also used this usb device (http://www.penguinsbest.com/index.php/superior-usb-virtual-7-1-channel-sound-card-adapter-dongle-free-shipping.html). It sounds much better and could realistically be a true sound card replacement.

Just my two cents! Good luck!

I just bought one. It doesnt work nativly, but you can select the device by going to prefrences> sound, and selecting the USB bevice. Is there anyway, i can make ubuntu use the USB card/ internal speakers, using a switch or something ?

Sure, you can even use them both at the same time if you want.

Hi

I dont think a USb sound card is any good especially with a laptop if it only has a Mono audio input. A stereo input is essential to capture audio and it is a major problem with most laptops not have a dedicated line in like all desktop PC have.
