Requirements:
Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)
OpenOffice 2.3 or 2.4

4 Steps:
1. From the 2.3 version, the default setting for macros has been modified. You need to lower the security. To do so go to OpenOffice > Tools > Options... > OpenOffice.org (OOo) > Security > Macro Security... > Set the level to Medium. Click on OK button.

2. Go to OpenOffice > File > Wizards > Install new dictionaries... It opens a document, click on desired language link. Don't worry if you don't find your language, this is only for the dialogs language. Click on the big grey square button. Follow the instructions on screen. You can also do the installation off line after having downloaded the archive containing your language files.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
After clicking the above big grey square button. If the popup window is too small then make sure Ubuntu visual effects (compiz) are disabled. That is changing ubuntu default visual effects from "Extra" or "Normal" to "None" To do so go to Ubuntu Panel > System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects tab > Change the setting to NONE > Click on CLOSE button.

If the wizard is not found, you can download it on the OOo wiki web page for Dictionaries: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Dictionaries

If you have a firewall such as Firestarter make sure it's configure appropriately.

3. So the changes are taken into account you must close OpenOffice. Make sure all OpenOffice windows are closed. Close the Quickstarter too.

4. Open OpenOffice. Enjoy.

Do you write in multiple languages? Tired of fumbling with long ways of changing the language to indicate to the spell checker which dictionary to use? OpenOffice.org 2.4 adds three new ways to select the language for easier use:

1. The context menu for misspelled words
2. The status bar
3. The Tools > Language menu

1. Context menu for misspelled words

Right click on any misspelled word to bring up the context menu. Then, choose the language for the selection or for the paragraph.

OpenOffice.org open office 2.4 Writer context menu for misspelled word allows you to change the text language

NOTE: The language options in this menu are not shown unless the selected word is misspelled.

2. The status bar

At the very bottom of the OpenOffice.org window, the current language is displayed in the center of the status bar. To change the language of the current paragraph, right click on the name of the current language. OpenOffice.org 2.4: The status bar allows you to change the language

3. The Tools > Language menu

Click on Tools and then on Language. In addition to changing the language for the selection and for the paragraph, this option (unlike the above) allows you change the language for all the text.
OpenOffice.org: The Tools-Language menu allows you to change the document language
The traditional ways

In OpenOffice.org 2.4, you can still use the traditional ways to change the language. The easiest way is:

1. Highlight the appropriate text
2. Click Format > Character
3. Click the Font tab
4. Choose a language from the drop-down menu

To set the language for the whole document or for a paragraph style, consult the built-in OpenOffice.org help. Really, it's good. :) Press F1, go to the index, and lookup languages;selecting.
