View Full Version : [ubuntu] ekiga webcam and msn messenger

i'm trying to go on the webcam with a friend who has msn messenger...what is the best way to do this...i do have an ekiga adress but have no real idea how to use it and what others have to do in order for us to do a video call...any advice would be greatly appreciated...thanks.

Bearing in mind that I am unfamiliar with Ekiga..erm...Amsn?

Ekiga only works with other ekiga members. Since your friend only has MSN messenger, the only thing you can try is getting amsn.



sudo apt-get install amsn


Once you get it, run it and configure your webcam. Do you already have a hotmail account? you need one to set up amsn.

Apparently Empathy has video chat. This might be an option.

empathy DOES havideo chat, unfortunately because msn has a weird/proprietary video streaming protocl it's difficult to reproduce (and it's non free) so empathy won't include at all (I think) because of its proprietary nature.

*amsn is the way to go. Its not the best looking client in the world, but there are quite a lot of skins for it, and you can configure most of it. And for webcam chats its great, and auto detects most webcams I've tried with it.
