I've run Intrepid Ibex and then alpha tested Jaunty with ext3 for months on this laptop. Yesterday I reformatted to try Alpha 6 cleanly, and test ext4.

In general, things are working well, but I the hard drive is constantly going and whining - I don't think it's terribly healthy. :)

What should I be looking at/what can I change? Is this a known issue?

Computer is an IBM T43 Laptop.

I would say that I might possibly have the same issue. It was pretty bad yesterday; like hearing a PC from last millennium write data!! I haven't noticed it today though.

Can't say for sure if it's jaunty, or it I'm starting to get hardware problems. By co-incidence, I had ran gsmartmontools a few days ago - there were no problems flagged up.

I'm on a Packard Bell MB88 with a ST9160821AS from Seagate, using ext4.
