View Full Version : Can't access ecryptfs home after re-install of jaunty

Dear Friends,

How screwed am I. Yesterday I had a working updated jaunty 64 bit install, and today, after some frustration with installing some third party non-64 bit software, decided to re-install jaunty i386.

Unfortunately, in my previous install, I'd encrypted my home directory with ecryptfs at install time. My home partition is intact, but I've re-formatted my old root partition. I suspect I remember my passphrase, but what my 'key' is I do not know. Can I still mount my home directory, or am I completely screwed?

I hope not, as my grandmother's book that I was formating in TeX and all my photos from my trip to Mexico were on there, and not backed up.

If, I'm not screwed, could someone tell me what commands to use to get back my home? I'm sure I used the default options at install time to encrypt my home directory, and as I said, I should know my passphrase.

Huge thanks to anyone who can help.

Regretfully,

Corin Royal Drummond

P.S. If there is a more appropriate forum for this post, please clue me in, and I'll repost.

I don't have experience with encryptfs but why do you need a password and key?
