backlight has died suddenly (macbook pro 1.1)

Im using intrepid 8.10 on my macbook pro, have been since it came out and last night I turned my laptop on and the backlight is dead. I'm not a programmer myself so any help would be great. I did put something like xset force on or dpms on or something in terminal and it flashed on for a second so i know its working. Also, it has come on momentarily during start up so it waorks. cud this be a bug? or something to do with the graphics card? Do you think a re-install would work?

Usually rebooting to OS X and then back to Ubuntu fixes these problems. It tends to be problems with cooperation between the Apple-proprietary hardware and open-source software that causes backlight issues.
