I would like to download a free anitvirus program like AVG or Avira but it only downloads the bin file and will not work. Can you suggest some other program...its for a mini Dell inspiron. I have Ubuntu.
Also, I cannot work the "At" key it comes up as a quotation " instead can you suggest something??
Thanks

You're using Linux now, so you really don't need anti-virus software.
But if you're adamant about it, the easiest way is to go to
Applications --> Add/Remove --> Switch the tab next to "Show" to "Show All Available Applications" --> Search "Virus"
And look for a suitable anti virus. The one called "Virus Scanner" seems to be a popular choice.
Just for future reference, you can find almost any free software this way. So much easier than searching online for it!

As the above post say currently there is no need for an antivirus application in Ubuntu, just like on macs. I hope it will stay that way (I'm using Ubuntu for several years now and never heard anyone that was infected with something).

Agreed with others: antivirus is largely unnecessary.
Do you have a UK or US Mini?

If you still want AVG for Ubuntu, get it here: http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afl
It's the 7.5 version, but it's a deb, so it's easy to install. Alternatively, theres ClamAV, which is available in Add/Remove...

ooh! I reckon I can help with this bit, it might be giving you the quotation mark because the keyboard layout is set to the wrong country. To change the keyboard layout go to System>Preferences>Keyboard then 'Tab' to 'Layout'. Is it set to the wrong country layout in there?
I've got a UK keyboard layout, if it was set to a USA layout then my @ and " get switched.
I started using ubuntu yesterday, so many many apologies if I am barking up the wrong tree

I'd be guessing, but that sounds dead right to me.
by the way, twignation, do your friends call you "Twiggy"? ;)

The only use I have had for a anti-virus program on Ubuntu is scanning files I share from windows boxes on the network at my job. I have had files sitting on my box then someone with a windows box accesses the file and there anti virus catches it. just my 2cents

I think that anti virus is not necessary but if you want some antivirus program.
Try Avast for linux : http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-for-linux-edition.html
And choose .deb package if you are not suited in compiling.
