Inspiron 640m (aka e1405) running 8.10. Fn+F8 for CRT/LCD has never worked with 8.10 (works in XP), never tried any other linux distros or earlier ubuntu versions.
Look forward to some help (thought of posting on absolute beginners because I am but thought I'd try here first).

Solved in Jaunty.
Hi! Would you like to help another newbie?
I have Ubunty 9.04 (on Inspiron 1420, maybe similars to yours) but the CRT/LCD (Fn+F8) does not work. Would you like to explain how you solved it?
Thanks allot!

Oups, now it works! I just had to do ( Fn + F8 ) enough times.

Yeah Fn+F8 twice seems to do the trick. In Windows the first Fn+F8 gives video out but blank screen I think (been a while since I did that!) and that doesn't happen in Ubuntu, giving the impression nothing is happening until the second time.
So anyway, the fix was basically upgrading to 9.04.
