My laptop (an HP DV6000) died this week. Since it was pretty old anyway, and the cost of fixing it was not worth it, I'm thinking of getting a new one.

Since I'm a poor med school student, I need something that's cheap (~$500), and light to carry. Do you guys have any suggestions?

The Dell Inspiron Mini 12 prices at around $500, and has a much more usable screen and keyboard than the Eee or the Mini 9. That, and Dell has a pretty good track record with Linux support. (However, Dell doesn't offer Mini 12 models with Ubuntu preinstalled.)

I would go for Dell Inspiron Mini 12 with that ~$500.
Bigger screen, bigger keyboard, but still light weight
(2.7 lbs / ~1.3 kg) and about same price as any other
netbook ($399 with Ubuntu as OS).

I cant find about how much an EEEPC would cost...and ive heard nightmare stories about dells. I may look into an eeepc when I move if the price is right...

Dell are sometimes good, sometimes bad.

The Mini's are good ones almost exclusively.

An abacus. I believe they've gotten Arch ported to it.
