I am quite new to the linux/Ubuntu environment, but I found a very helpful script to install VMware Server in Ubuntu Hardy at

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=788169

but when I ran it I got the following message: Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.2.3", while you are trying to use
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.2.4". This configuration is not recommended and
VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same
compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.2.4" anyway? [no]

This is about the fourth time I have tried by various methods to install VMware without success. I can barely spell Ubuntu, much less install/revise kernels, compilers, etc.

Can someone guide me toward rebuilding my kernel (whatever a kernel is) or whatever is necessary to make progress? I don't understand how my kernel?? can be outdated when I set up the whole computer, including a whole new boot disk and dual-boot XP/Ubuntu operating systems two days ago. The script was written several months ago.
