Psystar has been making headlines in the past few months because they are now selling desktops with OS X pre-installed on their non-Apple hardware. The machines they have pre-built do not look at all bad for the price. They also have an option where they will configure the unit to dual boot with either Linux or Windows. Has anyone had any experience with Psystar? I'm wondering what would happen if I bought one and Apple shut them down... Would I SOL, or do you think they would be forced to offer a recall?

The machines look pretty good, but until the Legalities get worked out I'd avoid any OSX on non-apple hardware. I support psystar and denounce apples use(abuse) of the EULA. That said I have little faith in law to act in a just way and I would hate to see someone lose money on something.

If I was in the market for another Mac I would buy one. Coming with a dual boot sounds nice. I don't see how a costumer could lose. The machine is yours and you have Ubuntu on it. I have found I like Ubuntu much better than Mac but mac osx is good. The thing to me I can buy used equipment that runs Ubuntu just as good for less than a new machine.

Psystars systems are completely generic pc's, the hack to run OS X is in software, and you can accomplish it yourself by looking at insanelymac.com.

So, if you want to be against the eula, save a buck and do it yourself ;)

I actually just got a Psystar computer in the mail today. I didn't opt for the dual-boot, though. I figured it'd be easy enough to do that myself. I also didn't want to spent $99 on WiFi, I picked a WN111v2 for 1/5 the cost and it works great! My overall impression so far is that this is a very good machine for the price. Sure you COULD make one yourself, but you wouldn't be saving any money... I got a fairly nice setup for under $800... it puts my $1500 MacBook to shame! Now I just have to work on getting dual (or triple?!) booting up and running!

My only complaint so far is that I can't do any virtual machining. I knew going in that I couldn't do bootcamp, but I wish I had known that Parallels wasn't going to be an option either!
