crazy feedback sound after loading Skype

when my mini 9 loads, i get a crazy feedback sound from the time the OS's sound kicks on, until i can get into Also Mixer and turn down the speakers. i set up Skype using the steps on this site.

suggestions? its extremely annoying and embrassing if i wanted to take my mini9 out of the house. thanks.

I don't have a mini but I've had similar problems due to PulseAudio.
Does the mini9 use PulseAudio?
$ ps -e | grep pulse
