I've been really impressed with all the hardware support for the MBP 5,1.

The one real problem is how hot it runs while plugged in, seemingly due to the 9600M GT running in a high performance (Desktop) level.

I've adjusted the fan speeds manually, but since the MBP seems to run much cooler when on battery, I think a better solution for me would be to have the video card running as though it was on battery all the time.

Does anyone know how to change the performance level?

Thanks!

the nvidia driver supports scaling the GPU speed. There are some other issues that are still not worked out though. These machines seem to run quite hot, and nobody has figured out how to get them cooler.

Thanks for the reply. I found out the problem I was seeing was caused by running the internal display and an external display at the same time. This caused it to lock at the highest performance level. Running just the external monitor lets it scale.

I'm used to ThinkPad T and X series laptops. Like the AL MacBookPro they use materials which trade strength and thinness for greater heat transfer to the user, so to me it's not surprising parts of the MBP are warm to the touch.
