I have Wine 1.1.16 running under Ubuntu 8.04.

If I fire up MSPAINT in Wine, it starts up but I cannot interact with the file system, either trying to read an existing bmp file or (having created a new image in the program) trying to write a file.

In both cases it says (by a typical Error box) that it cannot Register the document and suggests it may be already open.

The version of Paint is that which goes with Windows95.

I know I could use GIMP, but for some things Paint would be simpler.

How can I get round this?

um, you could use a native linux image editor closer to MS Paint

there's several...

gpaint: (Available in Ubuntu repositories) -gnome
kolourpaint: (Available in Ubuntu Repositories) -KDE app
mtpaint: (Available in Ubuntu Repositories)

All these are simple and similar to MS Paint, but offer extra capabilities. You can install them via Synaptic or with add/remove programs...

Dan - thanks for that. I've installed gpaint using synaptic and it does just what I want. Wonderful!

I do most of my stuff with Gimp or inkscape, but i wanted to try a simpler drawing app for Gnome:

Gpaint : excelent.
MTPaint : feels old and ankward.
